A Welsh Cob mare called Lucy increasingly suffered from a locking stifle or patella in both back legs, whilst between the ages of eleven months and five years. Every year, the vet came to see her and her owner was told that Lucy would grow out of it. A physiotherapist also told the client to do poles at walk and exercise. These instructions were followed. While the advice and increased work rate seemed to reduce the leg lock, after a period of exercise it became apparent that this was leading to an increase in pain in Lucy’s stifles. The mare’s way of telling her owner this was to became very reluctant to be bridled and saddled. Lucy just looked off colour and stiff.
At five years of age, the mare’s legs were locking regularly. The more this happened, the more pain Lucy was in, so this approach was really getting nowhere towards breaking the cycle. The use of an equine pain killer was also tried, but this was not something the owner wanted to choose as being a long term solution.
Lucy’s owner was having riding lessons here at Saddle Synergy and we had already very successfully treated a long term condition in the owner’s shoulder, using SCENAR therapy. After we advised the client of the various ailments and conditions we had alreadly treated in horses, we started planning together; working along the basis of the owner’s thought pattern. She believed,”If it’s good enough for me, then it’s good enough for my Lucy.”
As was her way at the time of our first session, Lucy objected to being treated; spinning and trying to stop me undertaking the gentle therapy. She loved everything, excepting any treatment on her back legs. We quietly persisted. I am so very glad we did, as the very next day it was as if we had a new pony!!!! Lucy now had a smile on her face and we watched her walk up the field, without locking out once. It seemed totally unbelievable. Lucy’s legs were always worse after having been inside, so to see her freely walk up the field was fantastic. She does still have the occasional lock, however SCENAR has reduced the incidence of this by about seventy five percent.
We undertook three treatments in quick succession, allowing 3-4 days between them and then followed up, with three more appointments over the following weeks. Lucy definitely got the idea of the SCENAR machine. On only her second treatment we did not even need a headcollar; she just stood there as we worked all over her. The mare found it so relaxing; her eyes drooped and her bottom lip went South. Now, both Lucy and her owner love their SCENAR sessions.
“After these SCENAR sessions, I had a totally different pony. The pain in her legs had reduced dramatically and I could see her demeanour had changed. She was happy to have a bit put in her mouth and gone was the quick walk around the stable to avoid the saddle. I am not saying that six sessions and she is cured, but we are now in a position where SCENAR has alleviated the pain in her joints and dramatically reduced the number of times her legs lock. I can now give her additional work and follow the advice of the vets/physios and strengthen her muscles etc without causing her distress.”
“I am just so impressed with SCENAR. It has enabled me to see a way forward with Lucy, without having to resort to surgery. Thank you Jill – Lucy and I love you and cannot say thank you enough.”
